Marvelous Mattie : how Margaret E. Knight became an inventor by Emily Arnold McCully

marvelous-mattieMarvelous Mattie is a great story to demonstrate characterization.  Words that students have used to describe Mattie are kind, artistic, persistent, smart, courageous, generous, helpful, self-confident,  and optimistic.

Graphic organizers such as the bubble map work for this activity.

Students may draw the conclusion that Mattie wanted to make the weaving machine safer as evidenced by her work to re-design the machine so that there was a safety catch on it so that the bobbin would not fly off and hit anyone again.
