Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters an African Tale by John Steptoe

mufarosPredicting: What do you predict Manyara will do when she sees the grove of laughing trees and meets the man with his head under his arm?

Compare and Contrast, Characterization: the two sisters, Nyasha and Manyara

What is the underlying meaning of the story?  I think it is to be kind at all times.  I have heard that a person’s real character is how they behave when no one is watching. Nyasha was consistently kind to everyone both human and animal.

Cause and Effect: Because Nyasha was kind and generous, the effect is that the king chose her to be the queen.  Because Manyara was unkind and selfish, she was not rewarded by the king.

Personification: The snake speaks as if human.
