This Easy Reader beginning chapter book is a good pick to read to first graders about Groundhog Day. In the four chapters, a brother and sister cat discuss the traits of a groundhog, how to attract one, and what it means to see a groundhog’s shadow.
Predicting: Throughout the story the cats are preparing to see a groundhog. On the next to the last page they hear munching behind a flower pot. Students can predict that it will be a groundhog and they will be right!
The text involves the cats in a research project on groundhogs. They look in newspapers, magazines, and the Internet and find that groundhogs make a barking sound and have sharp teeth.
