Text-to-text connection with Pale Male Citizen Hawk of New York City by Janet Schulman
Cause and Effect: Because a man stole the other baby peregrine falcons, the effect is that Sam rescues Oksi and takes her to his forest home.
Compare and Contrast the nest home on the bridge with the nest home in the forest
Mental Image: Can you make a mental image of a bird’s nest inside a bridge high over a river? If you have been to the mountains, did you see anything like this? Have you seen a movie with a scene of a bridge up high over a river?
Can you make a mental image of the goshawk and Oksi fighting in sky?
Main Idea: Oksi does things her own way. She doesn’t put her head down and pretend to be a river rock when her mother warns that there is danger near. What evidence to we have to draw the conclusion that this is the main idea?
1. Instead she stands up in the back of the bridge girder.
2. She won’t stay in the box away from the Owl.
3. She flew when her wing feathers were still soft.
4. She attacked the goshawk
5. She recognized the pigeon trap, and went to the pigeon cote to catch her meal.
6. She refused to fly south with her mother.
7. She made her nest in the forest.
