Tall Tales by Karen Day

Tall TalesTall Tales is a very serious book that is for the older grade levels, but could be understood by a 5th grader. The story is told from the point of view of the middle child. She tries to keep her father’s problem a secret from her school friends.

The problem that her father has is drinking alcohol. When he drinks too much, he is verbally and physically abusive to his family calling them names like crybaby, and he also grabs his son’s arm so hard that he breaks it. I do like the ending though. When the family finally faces the truth, there are people who want to help them.

A neighbor woman befriends the mother, and a girlfriend befriends the main character. Both friends help the family to take the step to let the father move away and start to help themselves.
