Book Care
Last year Beverly Combs suggested putting a diaper on a book and comparing taking care of a book to taking care of a baby. It worked great! I told the kids I was going to do something that would make them laugh, and then I pulled the diaper out of my bag and put it on the book. I used a pull-up style diaper so I could take it off and use it over and over throughout the week. I told the class that we were going to compare taking care of a book with taking care of a baby.
I asked them these questions and got lots of laughter while fully engaging the students minds about taking care of library books:
Would you throw your baby on the floor and step on it? Then we don’t want to throw our books on the floor and step on them.
Would you let your pet chew on your baby? Then we don’t want to leave our books on the floor or where our pets can get to them.
If you had sticky fingers from eating chocolate or peanut butter, would you wipe it on your baby? Then we don’t want to wipe our sticky fingers on our books.
Would you put your baby on your head and walk around with it and let it fall off and hit the floor? Then we don’t want to put our books on our head and let them fall and get bent corners.
Would you let another family take your baby home from daycare? Then we don’t want to let our daycare friends take our library books home with them.
Would you leave your baby outside on the yard and let it get wet with the sprinkler? Then we don’t want to leave our books outside to get wet either.
Would you set your baby on the table while you were eating dinner where a glass of milk could spill on it?
Would you allow another baby to babysit your baby? Then we don’t want to leave our books out where our babies can scribble and tear them.
Would we throw our baby? Then we don’t want to throw our books.

We’ve done this too and it works great! I just found your blog – thanks so much for sharing your wonderful ideas.
I have also compared caring for a book to caring for a baby. I used a receiving blanket rather than a diaper and taught them a little song sung to the tune of On Top of Old Smokey. I held my book like a baby and sung it like a lullabye! They cracked up! Here are the lyrics:
Please take care of my babies
I do love them so
Treat them so gently
Wherever you go
Bring them back next week
On your library day
Please take care of my babies
Now be on your way…..
@Susan Carothers: I love your song! Is it ok to post the comment for others to see and use? Thank you for sharing with Texas Librarian!
Susan replied with permission to use her song:
“Oh yes, it is fine to post the Book Care song!
I love how this website incorporates the Reading Strategies with the lessons. Thank you for your efforts!”
